Exhibitions of the “Start” group in the City Art Gallery, Łódź. Here is a notice about the exhibition from the national arts periodical, Sztuki piękne (June 1926, page 240), emphasizing the surprising existence of an arts scene in Łódź, the city of factories and merchants:

Wystawa »Startu«. Łódź nie jest wcale gruntem podatnym dla sztuki. To największe i najludniejsze po Warszawie miasto w Polsce żyło zawsze i żyje dotąd zgoła odrębnem życiem, w którem nie ma, a przynajmniej do niedawna nie było miejsca na zainteresowanie nie objęte kalkulacją pieniężnej giełdy podaży i popytu na wytwarzany tu włókienniczy przemysł.
Świeżo założone Stowarzyszenie Artystów (»St - art«) w Łodzi podjęło arcytrudne zadanie przezwyciężyć zorganizowanym trudem i bojem istniejące trudności, rozgrzać posępną atmosferę fabryk, kantorów i cuchnących ulic i koszar Łodzi ciepłem własnego zapału i umiłowania piękna i wytworzyć w ten sposób także dla siebie możliwe warunki życia i artystycznej pracy. Urządzono z początkiem grudnia pierwszą wystawę dziel członków tego towarzystwa, która zamknięto w końcu stycznia. Wystawa obejmywała sto kilkadziesiąt prac Karola Hillera, N. Szpigla, A. Wajnbauma, J. Hirschfanga, S. Finkelsztajna, R. Rosentala, J. Lejzerowicza i t. d. i cieszyła się wyjątkowem, jak na Łódź, powodzeniem.

Exhibition of “Start”. Łódź is not at all a receptive place for art. It is the largest and most populous city in Poland after Warsaw but has always lived and still lives a quite separate life, in which there was, at least until recently, no room for interests that did not involve the calculation of profit, supply, and demand for the textile manufacturing industry here.

The newly founded “Start” Society of Artists [Stowarzyszenie Artystów] (“St - art”) in Łódź took on the extremely difficult task of organizing efforts to overcome existing difficulties in order to warm up the grim atmosphere of the factories, the money dealers, and the stinking streets and barracks of Łódź; warming up the city with their own enthusiasm and love of beauty and, in this way, creating – also for themselves – conditions that make life and artistic work possible. The first exhibition of works by the association’s members opened at the beginning of December and closed in late January. It included a hundred works by Karol Hiller, N. Szpigl, A. Wajnbaum, J. Hirschfang, S. Finkelsztajn, R. Rosental, J. Lejzerowicz, and others. This exhibition was a great success, which was rather astonishing for Łódź.

Three works by Lejzerowicz were included in the exhibition: two from the collection of the Muzeum Sztuki w Łodzi (self-portrait, 1930, and drawing of a head, 1928) and one oil portrait on plywood, dated 1926, of a man, possibly Dr. Chaim Uryson, from the Jewish Historical Institute / Żydowskiego Instytutu Historycznego in Warsaw.
