Łódź Art Award
Painter Lejzerowicz has two candidates and strong words of criticism
(Artists Survey by the “
Głos Poranny [Morning Voice newspaper])

The painter Lejzerowicz, now taking part in our survey, is very critical of the institution of arts awards.
However, he considers it appropriate to put forward two candidates from Łódź.
– “For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath.”* So it seems, says the Book of the Revelation of St. John – as Mr. Lejzerowicz begins his remarks. – But, he adds, we have long since gone beyond this most terrible prophecy of scripture.
Today, society takes everything away not only from those who have little, but to make things worse,
carefully cultivates a new type of beggar – the artist-beggar,
to restore the lost luster of an artist and a man in the most notable way by giving him an award for something. And what more handsome compensation for you if not an “award,” whether in the form of a medal, a diploma, or, finally, a sum of money? The cost is always cheap – all the noise and bustle could make one believe that the donor indeed actually supports the arts. But in reality it just
irritates unhealthy ambitions and loosens the community of artists even further.
The award in the arts has long since been dethroned.
Too many incompetents have received it and still receive it, while Cézanne, the greatest master and the father of modern painting, dreamed in vain all his life about the award, probably a round gem that dozens of other artists have received, not worth the buttons of his coat. Cézanne could not master the foibles and maybe he just wanted to show off in front of his sister, or perhaps believed that this award is the spontaneous expression of enthusiasm and respect that it once used to be.
But now the prize is given with more deliberation and calculation:
give it to Paul or give it to Gaul. **
No wonder that it smells a bit like favoritism and demagogy. In sports, awards may be relevant today. Even a child can judge correctly here; after all, he sees who stood at the finish line first, who last, and who sprained his leg. There is no room here for non-factual criticism. In painting, even the best criticism no longer raises confidence, as
one is not able to battle the chaos reigning in the arts,
indeed, it can even make it worse. Consider the crafty crooks who created trust in advertising, admirably well organized. Here a painter one day receives a letter full of recognition with the proposal that the best [i.e., most positive] criticism will be printed. Please just send 30 francs and a photograph – fabulously cheap! It must be admitted that trust serves customers fairly. – Significant criticism quickly appears in French and other periodicals, a precise biography, then the photo, and then all at once a very “critical” overview of the artist’s work and predictions of “a great future.” Even Rembrandt certainly did not enjoy such recognition. –
And all for just 30 francs.
I think that a person who, with just one of his fingers contributes to the purification of the stale air in the arts, will do more than even displaying 20 "so-so paintings."
The only painter in Łódź who most deserves the Award of the City of Łódź, a prominent theorist of art, is
Mr. Władysław Strzemiński.
I say this openly, although I am a strong opponent of his ideology. I do recognize the value of the intellect in the arts, but I do not consider that this factor should be considered more important than other elements. I think that Mr. Strzemiński’s "unism," which is the most conclusive result of an almost completely formalistic analysis of art, creates finally a bright, although not entirely hospitable harbor in contemporary art, which can be a starting point for journeys in all directions. “Unism,” I predict, will play an incredibly important role in the further shaping of the synthesis of painting, because it is the “ism” that will swallow all other “isms” and will die with them, giving rise to great art.
Of course, I talk about Mr. Strzemiński mainly as a theoretical painter. As for the artist, an award should be given to a man who represents the full meaning of this word and whom almost no one knows, namely Jean Beron, who Kisling for some reason wrote died recently in Paris. But
Jean Beron (resident of Łódź)
lives and continues to work under the worst conditions right near Łódź. It is a great shame for our city that it has still not noticed his work.
But the prize doesn’t matter – it doesn’t change the status quo. – In the meantime, my father and my mother hand out “awards.” We have the honor to be visited by the tax collector (I do not know him in a different way) to collect the “award” in the form of taxes, which takes away my ability to work. The only thing that makes me happy in this whole parade is the fact that the award of 10,000
złotych has already been collected, for otherwise I would definitely have to say goodbye to my last couch, which would be auctioned off under the hammer in order to add a few more złotych to this honorable sum.

*Actually, Matthew 25:29, Mark 4:25; or Luke 19:26.
**i.e., it doesn’t matter who gets the prize. Literally, “give it to Paweł or give it to Gaweł,” referring to characters in a well-known poem for children by Aleksander Fredro (1793-1876). The poem concerns two men who try to get even with each other by playing tricks.

Nagroda artystyczna Łodzi
Art.-mal.

– Kto dużo posiada, temu jeszcze więcej będzie dane, a kto mało, to temu i to odebrane będzie. Tak zdaje się, mówi Apokalipsa sw. Jana – rozpoczyna swe uwagi p. Lejzerowicz. – Lecz my – dodaje – dawno już wyprzedziliśmy najstraszliwsze przepowiednie pisma świętego.

i człowieka i czemukolwiek wynagrodzić.

ba, może go jeszcze pogłębia. Zrozumieli to spryciarze i oszuści, którzy utworzyli trust reklamowy o podziwu godnej organizacji. Oto malarz otrzymuje pewnego dnia list pełen uznania z propozycją umieszczenia jaknajlepszej krytyki. Należy tylko przesłać 30 franków i fotografję – bajecznie tanio! Przyznać należy, że trust rzetelnie obsługuje klientów. – Wkrótce ukazują się istotnie krytyki we francuskich i innych pismach, ścisły życiorys, potem fotografja, a potem jednym zamachem niezwykle „krytyczny” rozbiór prac artysty i przepowiednie „wielkiej przyszłości”.

żyje i dalej pracuje w najgorszych warunkach tuż obok Łodzi.
